With the Cherry Fair and Raft and Duck Races falling on the same weekend, we are used to the last days of June being hectic.

Added to that, Armed Forces Day was marked with a joint Royal British Legion and Olney Town Council reception at the Olney Centre. Many veterans attended, and the event also served as a salute to those forces fighting current battles.

And in the same weekend, the new Milton Keynes Mayor, Debbie Brock held a fundraising garden party in Emberton attended by members of the MK Dons. There were also representatives from Willen Hospice and Bletchley Park (the official charities). A host of others enjoyed the balmy evening and live music.

Basking in wonderful sunshine, the Cherry Fair (Saturday 26th) was very successful once again. In the arena, a Karate demonstrations and Olney Infant School country dancing were popular with spectators. There was a good turnout too for the dog show. Stallholders reported brisk business, particularly for refreshment. Local charity Advantage AFrica sold out of punnets of cherries; a reminder of the origins of the cherry-pickers fair. Chairities from the church to pre-school also benefitted from the event.

It was a scorching day for the duck and raft race on Sunday 27th. Organisers had been mindful of the nesting swans - which caused many a restless night as plans for the route were made. The Scout-run Duck race was a popular spectacle with hundreds of plastic ducks released from the weir.

A report of the raft race is here, please click.
